2 1/2

My sweet first born is exactly 2 1/2 years old today. He's developed quite the personality and I wanted to document some of that now. . .

He's almost always singing a song. Usually nursery rhymes, but he's got quite the repertoire. He sometimes even makes up his own lyrics to familiar tunes. And he's very particular about his accompaniment, saying either, "Mommy's gonna sing" or "Mommy can't sing!"

He's an awesome independent player and makes up all sorts of stories with his trains, cars, and trucks. It's fun to watch him set up his train track in a particular way, get specific train cars, then voice what his cars are saying. "Oh no!" as he crashes one into another. "You go to the hospital, Sir Topham Hatt." He's got easily 50 train cars from the Thomas collection and he knows the names of all of them, and he always knows exactly the one he wants. Same with his mix of trucks that number over 30.

He gets "winded up" (as Caroline would say) and just chatters, chatters, chatters. He's kind of like that commercial for the new search engine, Bing.com, where a person just spouts off random statements triggered by a specific word.

He loves to run. After not walking until he was nearly 18 months old, I find it amusing that he runs nearly everywhere now. And when I find a photo of him in mid-stride I think to myself that he's going to make a pretty darn good distance runner when he gets older. I just hope he's as interested in the sport as his Mommy!

After all that mental and physical activity, he crashes hard. Most afternoons he takes a 3 hour nap. And then he'll sleep 11-12 hours at night.

When you catch him doing something he knows he's not supposed to (like crawling across the top of the bookshelf in his room), he looks up with this "uh oh, I'm caught" look and then bursts into tears before I even say a word. At least he knows the rules, even if he can't remember to follow them all the time!

He's been testing his boundaries much more in recent weeks. When I ask him to do something, instead of complying (like he used to) he'll sometimes look right at me and say "no!" For now, if we tell him he has to do it before we count to 3, that works. I wish I understood the toddler mind better. . . he didn't want to do it, but somehow just by saying three numbers, he decides he will.

He taps his middle finger and thumb together (on each hand, simultaneously) and we can't really figure out why. Sometimes he does it when he's sitting, sometimes while standing, usually while he's in thought. We asked him why he does it and what it means and he just giggled and said, "Mommy's gonna do it! Daddy's gonna do it!" and we all three sat at the table tapping our fingers together, laughing!

His favorite foods are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, goldfish crackers, and graham crackers. He's also developed quite a sweet tooth and loves cookies and cake. His favorite treat is M&M's.

His favorite shows are Thomas the Tank Engine, Curious George, and the Planet Earth mini-series on the Discovery Channel.

He loves his books and has spent hours in his room "reading" them himself. Although he'd still prefer to sit in your lap and have you read them to him.

At times, he drives me completely crazy, but then he'll turn around and say, "I love you, Mommy" at the most unexpected time and completely melt my heart. He loves his baby brother and is patiently waiting for Benjamin to grow big enough to play cars and trains with him.

And we just can't imagine spending these last 2 1/2 years without this dear boy in our lives. We love you, Hayden!

Diddling

Rich inherited a trait known as "diddling" from his father. Diddling, basically, means wasting time while under the guise of doing projects. For instance, he'll often go out to the yard to mow the grass but end up finding 6 other things to work on before getting to the grass mowing. Usually they are productive tasks, but they aren't things that had to be done right then (or maybe ever) and they weren't intended to be on that day's agenda.

Almost every outside project/activity around here involves some "diddling".

When Benjamin was 2 weeks old, Rich decided it was the perfect time to completely fence in our yard. Two sides were fenced, courtesy of our neighbors, but that left the third side and connections to the house to be completed. This is a project that has been on the"to-do" list since we moved into the house 11 months ago. Choosing to do it with a newborn in the house, by it's very nature, made it a "diddling" project.

He enlisted the help of a friend and set to work digging 14 post holes, pouring concrete to secure the posts, and finally assembling the fence siding and building a gate. It took nearly 3 weeks--using just about every daylight hour that he was home--to get it finished.

I will say that he did a great job, and I'm glad that we finally do have a fenced-in yard, but I still don't think it had to be done just after bringing a new baby home!

The diddling wasn't over yet, though. Another project on the to-do list since we lived in California (that was 5 years ago!) was to build a pergola. Since he was on the building kick and our friend had all the right tools to borrow, he finished the fence project and moved right onto this:

Another 3 weeks passed and we now have this beautiful structure to provide some lovely afternoon shade:

I'm proud of his handiwork and love having the finished product. I think I'm even happier to have my husband back, though! He said to me after he finished the pergola, "gee, now what am I going to do with my time?" I'm sure he'll spend it diddling around in the yard. . .

Benjamin in the last few weeks. . .

I really go in spurts with my camera, particularly when it comes to Benjamin. I'll snap a few photos and then get frustrated that they're all the same. . . close-ups of him just barely smiling or looking at me with that "c'mon with the camera all ready, Mom" look. And so then I set the camera down and don't pick it up for several days or a week. While Benjamin is chaning quickly, he's still pretty much striking the same pose. And how many of those shots do I really need? Well, I sifted back through several photos and I'm glad I pulled the camera out when I did.

So, here's Ben being Ben. . .

Daddy thought he needed the headband for his "exercise" session (a.k.a. tummy time). . .

But then ended up just having story time instead. . .

Finally--I captured a glimpse of his elusive smile on camera!

A Macro trip to the Park

Last week, Rich borrowed a macro lens from a co-worker and I was excited to test it out on the 5D. We were headed to the neighborhood park, which provided some fun practice opportunities!

I certainly had fun with it and now have yet another addition to my photography wishlist!

The Old-fashioned Car

We had something that really got Hayden going last week. . .

A chance to go around the block in the "old fashioned car"!

He sees the car in the garage and has recently been asking about riding in it. Rich was more than happy to oblige and take his boy for a short ride.

I wish it was more than just a 2-seater, though, cause now I'm relegated to being photographer rather than passenger!

The Countdown

We've been counting down--removing a ring each day--to get to today. . .

That little airplane does indeed mean that we're headed to the airport today! I mentioned our trip to Hayden a few too many days before our actual departure and he's been begging to "go to GrammyGrandpa's, go to GrammyGrandpa's!" just about every waking hour since. I thought that I could help him understand the wait by making a paper chain and letting him tear one off each morning. He kind of got it, yet still did his share of begging. He's just so darn excited about this trip!

And I must confess, I'm pretty darn excited, too!

I'm not expecting to have much in the way of internet access while we're gone, though, so you'll have to wait until our return for all the details. I do, however, have some posts scheduled, so you won't be in Shertzer Time withdrawal. Bon Voyage!

Benjamin: 2 months old

Just like that--poof--another 2 pounds! He had his doctor's appointment last week and was measured at 11 lbs 7 oz and 23 1/2" long. He's getting so big!

He's definitely more alert, aware, and interactive than he was just a few weeks ago. He does give us some smiles but we really have to work for them, and even then, he has to be in the right mood.

He likes his "exercise" time--doing sit-ups and tummy time push-ups. Though he's still working on holding his head steady. He loves the aqua lounger and we usually catch him cooing and a-gooing to those fishies and bubbles.

We've got a bedtime routine of bath, books (Mommy Loves and The Going to Bed Book), and nursing, laying him down to sleep in his crib around 9:15 p.m. He's usually up at 2:30 a.m. for a snack, then back to sleep until 5 a.m. For three sweet days in a row he actually slept until 7:30! I'm hoping that's in our near future again! We don't really have a good morning schedule because we're out and about for Hayden's activities, but most days Ben takes a good afternoon nap at the same time as Hayden (hallelujah!).

Benjamin is such a natural part of our family and fits in perfect. I won't say that I can't remember what life was like before his arrival, but I will say that it's so much more complete now and I wouldn't go back to those simpler days for anything in the world. He's captured our hearts for good!

In addition to documenting him this month with his stuffed lamb, I also set him up for a photo shoot in his crib. . .

Oh, wow, how I love this boy!

ZooMontana

Since we had to make a 2 hour drive to Billings to meet Thomas last Friday, we decided to go ahead and really make a day of it by going to the zoo after riding the rails.

Despite being the only zoo in the state of Montana, it's not very big. And our afternoon timing didn't coordinate very well with the animals' nap times. We managed to see enough animals to excite our toddler, but we're glad his expectations weren't too high!

The free-roaming peacocks were one of the highlights for me

Hayden did a little posing for me. . .

Rich borrowed a macro lens from a co-worker and had fun playing around a bit. He even confessed that "this photography thing is pretty cool. . . I can see why you like it!"

Benjamin did what he does best. . . happily hanging out and napping!

We were quite the scene with our cameras, camera bags, diaper bags, snacks, and kiddos.

Thomas and animals--a toddler dream day! Rich and I remarked on the ride home that a Shertzer adventure these days is quite different than it was just 3 years ago. Rather than hike up a mountain or take an epic bike ride, we devoted the entire day's activities to our toddler. And watching the delight in his eyes was no less exciting than being out on a mountain trail!
